Bridging the school holiday hunger gap in Nakuru
CESRA’s Holiday Hunger Support Program provides daily nutritious meals to destitute school-going children during school holidays, when school feeding programs pause.
The challenge
- Many children rely on school feeding for their main daily meal
- During school holidays, this daily support stops
- Families facing extreme hardship struggle to provide food
Why it matters
- Some children eat one meal a day or none during school breaks
- Risk of malnutrition and illness increases
- Hunger affects dignity, wellbeing, and school readiness
Our response
- One nutritious meal per day during holidays (Mon–Sat)
- Children identified through public schools and ECD centres
- Accountability, child protection, and dignity at every step
How the program works
The Holiday Hunger Support Program is implemented through a simple, community-based model that ensures efficiency, accountability, and child protection.
Child identification
Public schools and ECD centres identify children who are completely destitute and heavily dependent on school feeding programs.
Community coordination
CESRA works with community leaders and institutions to organize safe feeding locations and supervision arrangements.
Meal preparation
Meals are prepared in approved community kitchens or church facilities using simple, nutritious, locally sourced food items.
Daily feeding
One meal is served per child per day from Monday to Saturday throughout the school holiday period.
Monitoring and records
Basic attendance registers and food records are maintained to support transparency and learning.
Reporting and review
At the end of each holiday cycle, CESRA reviews outcomes to improve efficiency and inform future expansion.

Accountability and expected impact
The Holiday Hunger Support Program is designed to be simple, transparent, and accountable — ensuring every contribution directly supports children in need.
Child identification
Beneficiaries are identified through public ECD centres and primary schools, prioritizing children classified as completely destitute.
Daily tracking
Simple attendance registers are maintained during feeding days to ensure accurate meal distribution.
Food accountability
Weekly food procurement and consumption tracking helps control costs, reduce waste, and maintain consistency.
Child dignity
No child images, names, or stories are used publicly. Privacy, safety, and dignity remain non-negotiable.
CESRA believes no child should go hungry simply because school is closed.
