Help a Child Initiative (HCI) is a distinguished Non-Governmental Organization dedicated to addressing the pressing needs of orphans and vulnerable children through comprehensive care, protection, and education. We specifically target marginalized children under 18, including orphans, abandoned, unaccompanied, and disabled youth in rural and low-income households. Our mission goes beyond immediate relief; we are dedicated to creating sustainable pathways out of poverty, empowering those living or working on the streets with the vital support they need to build a brighter future.
Operating in Rwanda, with our head office in Ikana village, Muhima Sector of Kigali City, HCI is committed to laying the foundation for a brighter future for Rwanda’s children. With a decade of proven success, we stand as a trusted force in the fight against child poverty.
Mission and vision: The mission of Help a Child Initiative (HCI) is clear: to provide holistic childcare, protection, and education services for vulnerable children and youth. By nurturing their potential, we envision to creating a healthy, resilient, educated generation capable of self-development and active participation in the betterment of the nation and the global community.
Our services are strategically organized into four functional areas:
- Family-based Child Education (FCE): At HCI, we believe in the power of family. Our FCE program focuses on reintegrating children into supportive family environments, tackling the root causes of child abandonment and institutional care. By strengthening family bonds and enhancing parent-child relationships, we create stability and resilience, ensuring every child thrives in a nurturing setting.
- Early Childhood Programming (ECP): With less than 20% of young children in Rwanda accessing early education, HCI is closing the gap by establishing Early Childhood Development (ECD) schools in underserved areas. Our initiative aims to open two new schools each year for at-risk children aged 3 to 5, laying the groundwork for their future success and holistic development.
- Foundational Learning (FL): Recognizing the challenges in literacy and educational performance, HCI is dedicated to improving outcomes for primary school students. By promoting effective instructional practices and integrating Assistive Learning Technologies, we are making education more inclusive and accessible, ensuring that every child has the tools they need to succeed.
- Health and Family Life Education (HAFLE): HCI prioritizes comprehensive sexuality education and the prevention of teen pregnancies, a critical public health issue in Rwanda. Through our “Caring, Healing, and Teaching” framework, we empower adolescents and teen mothers with invaluable knowledge, vocational skills, and resources for entrepreneurship, fostering dignity and self-reliance.
HCI is formally registered with the Rwanda Governance Board and has been granted Legal Personality to operate in compliance with Rwandan law regulating NGOs. Together, we are not just changing lives; we are building a resilient future for our children, communities, and nation. Join us in our mission to uplift vulnerable children and ensure they thrive in a world filled with opportunities!
