Kirinyaga County government has ordered a forensic audit of the management of Kirinyaga Children Home.
The order follows concerns raised by the area MCAs over misappropriation of funds meant for running of the institution.
Last week, the Assembly Gender committee led by the Leader of the Majority Kamau Murango visited the home which they found in a deplorable condition.
They claimed that the director of the children home had neglected the children who appeared traumatized, sleeping on rickety beds while many had no shoes on.
The MCAs demanded the replacement of the director claiming she could not explain how she has been spending Sh5 million allocated for the well being of the children every financial year.
“The kids walk around in tattered clothes and without shoes. Some sleep on beds without beddings while the available beds have outlived their usefulness,” Murango said
Deputy Governor Peter Ndambiri who visited the home Sunday said they had already ordered for an audit to establish the reality of the situation.
He said if there was any misappropriation of funds, the County government would take the necessary action against those involved.
Ndambiri at one time ordered the home employees to remove new bed sheets they had placed on the beds saying they were not marching with the other old beddings the children normally used.
“You spread these new bed sheets because you knew I was coming to visit the children’s home,” he challenged them.
The facility is currently home to 84 children from all over the County and is annually allocated Sh5 million for their upkeep.
